Air Fryer Roasted Onions and Potatoes (All You Need To Know)

If you’re looking for a quick and delicious way to cook potatoes and onions, try cooking them in your air fryer.

This recipe is simple to make and only requires a few ingredients, making it ideal for when you’re short on time. Plus, the air fryer gives the potatoes and onions an irresistible crispy exterior!

So, let’s get started.

How to make Air Fryer Roasted Onions and Potatoes?

Aside from an air fryer, all you need are a few simple ingredients that you most likely already have in your pantry.

Ingredients

Potatoes

If you want a soft, fluffy roast potato with a crisp outside, choose a starchy variety of potatoes. All-purpose potatoes will work well, as will any of the following:

  1. Yukon Gold
  2. Russet Potatoes
  3. Yellow varieties
  4. Idaho
  5. Red Gold
  6. Maris Piper

Alternatively, if you prefer firmer-textured roast potatoes, use a more waxy variety. This category includes most red, white, and fingerling/baby potatoes.

Onions:

This recipe calls for red onions, but you can substitute yellow or brown onions if you don’t have any on hand.

Seasoning:

Seasoning is optional in this recipe, but I always use a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor of the ingredients.

However, because the flavor of onions and potatoes is so versatile, you can season this dish with almost any other type of seasoning you like. 1,2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning, Mexican seasoning, Cajun spice mix, Indian seasoning, garlic powder, and smoked paprika are all good.

The recipe calls for light olive oil which is ideal for air frying. You can, however, substitute another cooking oil with a high smoke point (try avocado oil, vegetable oil, or corn oil).

Instructions

This recipe is very simple to prepare, but there are a few steps that must be followed precisely to produce the best crispy potatoes and onions:

Step 1- Allow the potatoes to soak for 5 minutes to remove any surface starch. Peel and cut the potatoes into 1-inch chunks, then soak them in a bowl of water while the onions cook. Before adding the oil, pat the potatoes dry.

Step 2- Drain and pat dry the potatoes once they have finished soaking. At this stage, you want to remove as much moisture as possible to help them get crispy once they start cooking.

Step 3- Toss the potatoes and onions in the oil and season. More oil, as usual, means crispier potatoes, but also more calories.

Step 4- Onions and potatoes should be fried in the air. Shake the basket or use tongs to quickly flip the onion and potato chunks during cooking. This ensures that the hot air reaches all sides, allowing them to cook evenly and crisply on all sides.

Serve them alongside an omelet or fried eggs.

How can you store Air fryer Onions and Potatoes?

Refrigerate any leftover onions and potatoes in an airtight container.

Use within three days.

You can reheat leftovers in your air fryer. Cook for 5 minutes at 360 °F/ 180 °C in the air fryer basket until hot.

Recipe Tips

• To make the potatoes cook evenly in the evening, cut them into cubes.

• Cut the onions into chunks so they don’t burn and don’t fall through the basket.

• To ensure that the potatoes and onions cook evenly, do not overcrowd the basket.

• Because I enjoy caramelized onions, I begin cooking the onions alongside the potatoes.

• If you like onions with a bit of crunch, add them after 10 minutes of cooking the potatoes.

Is it necessary to soak the Potatoes before Air frying?

No, it is not necessary to soak before air frying however, if you like them crispy then you must do this step.

Soaking the potatoes after cutting them removes some of the starch that potatoes naturally contain. This will produce a crispier fry.

A thirty-minute soak in cold water is sufficient, but you can soak them for longer if desired. Before frying the potatoes, make sure they are completely dry. Drain the potatoes and pat them dry with a clean, lint-free dish towel or paper towel.

Can you boil Potatoes before roasting?

Boiling your potatoes for a few minutes before roasting helps ensure a beautiful crisp crust on the outside.

If you don’t boil your potatoes, the outside skin will remain tough, preventing any fat from getting inside the cracks.

Pre-boil potatoes are cooked crispy in Air Fryer.

To perfectly pre-boil your potatoes, cut them into large chunks and place them in a pot of boiling water for about ten minutes, depending on size. You’re ready to roast when the outside is soft, but the inside is still raw and firm.

What is the correct way to caramelize Onions in Air Fryer?

Thin slices of onions
Air Frying onions take less time than flying them on the stove.

To caramelize onions in the air fryer, increase the air frying time and add some moisture (such as water or broth) because the air fryer is more prone to drying out vegetables.

True caramelized onions take at least an hour to cook low and slow until they’re ultra-tender and a deep, golden brown. These air fryer onions will taste like caramelized onions, but they won’t need to cook as long (which is the beauty of it!).
