Frozen hash browns

Step 1 – Place the frozen hash browns in the air fryer basket without spraying oil on it. Frozen hash browns already contained a bit of oil in them.

Step 2 – Let it cook at 380° F for 8 minutes, and keep flipping in between the cooking process. And in no time, you’ll have perfectly cooked, crispy, and delicious hash browns.

If you like spicy hash browns, you can coat them in peri sauce, and you can also season them with your favorite ingredients plus 1tbsp oil to give them a new taste like Siracha, Moroccan, or Cajun.

Another important point to note is that hash browns taste amazing when fresh, but if you have leftovers, you can freeze them by putting them in a plastic box and can air fry them later before serving.

Why should I make hash browns in the air fryer?

Because the air fryer cooking method is way faster than the traditional oven.

The traditional oven requires a lot of time to preheat, and the additional cooking time for potatoes is 20-25 minutes to the overall cooking process.

On the other side air fryer is the best way to make hash browns because

  • The air fryer only takes 2 minutes to preheat to the perfect temperature.
  • The circulation of hot fans cooks the food evenly from both sides and gives them absolute crispiness.
  • The air fryer process is fast. It almost cuts down the time by half, at least.

How to choose potatoes for making hash browns?

For the perfect taste of hash browns, choosing potatoes is one of the essential tasks. I think the following varieties of potatoes work well in hash browns.

You will find one of these varieties, depending upon the places you live. I have tried making hash browns of King Edward, Russet, and Dutch Cream, and all of them turned out great.

However, the best taste was with Kind Edward and Russet potatoes. I haven’t tried the other varieties, but I am sure they must also be good.

How many hash browns can be put in the air fryer at a time?

When it comes to air fry baskets, know that less is always more. So, make sure to put them in layers.

If you crowd the air fryer basket with too many hash browns, they won’t even cook properly, let alone of getting crispy from both sides.

So, just put them in a single layer in the air fryer basket to have evenly cooked hash browns with a perfect brown layer of crispiness on both sides. If you want to cook them in large quantities, it’s better to cook them in batches.

Why do hash browns not get crispy in an air fryer?

The reason hash browns don’t get crispy is they have a lot of moisture in them.

That’s why most of the time, people prefer to use frozen hash browns to get the perfect crispiness.

However, if you want to make it from raw potatoes, then it’s better to squeeze the moisture of the potatoes by putting them in between a paper towel or kitchen towel to get water out of them.

Allow them to let it dry for a few minutes, which would help them to get crispy.

Another tip to get the crispy hash browns is to add some oil to them. What I do is, add olive oil to the hash browns before putting them in the air fryer, and you can also add oil halfway through the cooking process to get them crispy enough.

Recipe Suggestion

I par-cooked the potatoes in the microwave in the same bowl they were soaked in to reduce the number of dishes.

Instead of microwaving the potatoes, you can boil them. Simply put the whole, unpeeled potatoes in the pot and bring them to a boil for 5 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before removing the peels and shredding them. If you don’t mind the hash browns being firmer and less soft on the inside, you can skip this step.

How to Keep Air Fryer Hash Browns Fresh?

Wrapped in foil, these hash browns will keep in the fridge for 3 days and reheat for a few minutes in the air fryer.

If you don’t want to air fry them all at once, you can easily freeze them. Simply place them on a baking sheet streaked with parchment paper and freeze. Set frozen hash browns in a zip-top freezer bag and they’ll stay up to three months in the freezer.

Conclusion

In summary:

  • Hash browns in an air fryer are easy to make and take 15 minutes.
  • Air fryer cut downs the cooking time by half at least.
  • If patties of hash browns have moisture, they won’t get crispy.
  • Before putting the hash browns in the air fryer, their moisture should be squeezed out by placing them in between a paper towel or kitchen towel.
